May the 4th Be With You

May the 4th Be With You

Hello Star Wars fans, I just wanted to give you a shout on this the holiest of Star Wars holidays, May the 4th be with you!

I remember long ago I was sitting in a group of twenty-something friends, one of which had no idea why the Star Wars franchise was so popular. I get that, it certainly isn’t for everyone. He asked why I liked it so much.

What’s the Big Deal With Star Wars?

For me, it’s a cool fantasy world where so many different beings from so many different lands coexist and just try to get along in one world. (Sound familiar?)

My favorite scene of all time was the Cantina scene. Everyone was hanging out, coexisting while a rag-tag group of friends came together to fight for the greater good. That theme has carried on throughout the series, from the early movies to the new.

There are fight scenes, but it isn’t blood and gore. A few sparks fly off a storm trooper’s armor and that’s about the extent of it. It’s something I am happy and proud to pass on to my own kids. Believe me, we are passing the baton.

The Star Wars Tradition Continues

I had a little long-sleeved pink shirt when I was little. It had a shiny, smooth silkscreen image of Princess Leia (the only princess I’ve truly ever identified with) Han, Luke and Jabba the Hut and I begged to wear it to school every day.

My mom gave in most of the time. I really wish I still had that shirt. I googled high and low but I can’t find an image of it that’s even similar.

I went on a TravelingMom writer’s retreat in Orlando recently and at the Disney Store I headed straight for the Star Wars section for souvenirs.

I got the boys Vader shirts and miniature Imperial Walkers (AT-ST is their technical name, All Terrain Scout Transport) since it was so close to May the 4th. They loved them.

My oldest begged to wear his Vader shirt to school every day. I gave in mostly. We’re up to 3 days this week, it’s a big hit on the playground for recess he tells me. You know me, just doing my part for playground harmony.

He’s wearing it today and will want to wear it again tomorrow. I’ll debate that one. I haven’t even washed it yet! Stay tuned.

What’s New with Star Wars?

I’m heavily stalking the Disney website because coming soon in 2018 is Star Wars Land. It is currently under construction at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World in Orlando and also at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA.

We drove around the backlot at Hollywood Studios on a transport bus to a TravelingMom event and it is indeed under construction, though we couldn’t see much.

But don’t worry, I’m watching this progress like a HAWK and I’ll let you know what’s up when there’s something new.

In the meantime, here is a short video (courtesy of MovieWeb) with an overview of what it will look like. I’m excited for the Cantina and Millenium Falcon exhibits myself.

So hang in there fellow Star Wars fans, Episode 8, The Last Jedi opens December 2017 and Star Wars Land is coming in 2018.

May the 4th be with you! And also with you.
