Father’s Day brings out a wide range of emotions.
Some had the good, loving guidance of a father and will go out and buy a card that says “Thanks Dad, I’m Everything I Am Because Of You.”
Some have lost their dad, and will say “I Miss You Dad, I Wish You Were Here.”
Some will get a card that says “Meh, Thanks Dad, I Turned Out Okay.”
And others will say “Thanks Dad For Being Nothing But A Total Douchebag.”
If you had an excellent father, then I rejoice in that and celebrate it with you. That is a huge deal, and vital to the fiber of this country. Yes, I’ll take it that far.
One of the most important relationships in a child’s life is the one they have with their father. It speaks volumes to a child’s worth and how they grow up.
If you have a great dad, or if you are a great dad, I salute you. It takes true grit to really dig in and be present with your kids. That is hard work in marathon form, and you deserve a big, fat steak and all the praise of the day.
But if you didn’t have a good dad, you are in good company. And I hope you know that that has everything to do with the character and attitude of one man. And not any one child.
Whether someone willingly walked away from you, or wasn’t there due to other legit circumstances, I hope you know that you are still good and capable and valuable, and able to do great things despite the lack of a leading father.
You can still go on and live your life and become a wonderful parent to your own children.
You can still have great relationships full of meaning.
And you can still become incredibly successful.
And I hope you know that there is a wonderful loving heavenly Father that can right the wrongs of any Earthly man. If you have never given Him a chance, you should. It is the most important thing you can do for yourself.
Please also note all of the following well-known people that grew up without their biological father:
- Louis Armstrong
- Maya Angelou
- Shaquille O’Neal
- Bill Clinton
- Halle Berry
- Will Smith
- Alicia Keys
- Eric Clapton
- Samuel L. Jackson
- Barack Obama
- Jack Nicholson
- Barbara Streisand
- John Lennon
So for whatever kind of Father’s Day card you buy, there is hope.
Though I have no doubt they were all still affected by growing up without a father, they went on to accomplish great things. Two even went on to become President.
No matter how you feel about any particular president, it’s amazing to have gone on to the task of leading a country when you weren’t shown a great leadership role from your own father.
I don’t get to buy the “Thanks Dad, I’m Everything I Am Because of You” card, but I do get to watch my husband fulfill his role in my sons’ lives, and see their beautiful relationships develop. I get to see the ideal through him.
To all of the fathers out there raising and investing in their children, we celebrate you. You may never know the full impact of your role in their life. Your influence carries a great deal of weight with your children.
And to those grandparents, uncles, older brothers, step dads, family friends, role models and single moms that step in to pick up the slack when dad isn’t there, Happy Honorary Father’s Day to you too. And thank you. It matters.
