I wanted to do something a little different for our Super Mario birthday party and I found something that came out really cute with minimal supplies and ingredients. I made Super Mario Toad/Mushroom cupcakes.

I used a regular white cake box mix for the cupcakes with white cupcake liners.  The frosting is a baker’s frosting (shortening and powdered sugar) with red food coloring and I used white chocolate chips as the dots on the mushroom tops.  I used a black sharpie to draw lines on the liners for the eyes.

I turned two small sized paper plates upside down to use as the base for the small cake.  I made the little cake with a mini cake pan.

I used a sharpie to draw the eyes on the plates and I think it turned out really cute. I found the cake topper on Amazon here:

The topper is adorable and a cake topper item. The figures are stationary, however and do not come apart for regular play, so it is more of a decoration, but it was adorable and he really liked it. When I removed the foil from the top of the pan to reveal this surprise cake, there was a lot of wow factor in his reaction.

They were a big hit! Definitely an easy do-it-yourself project without a lot of hassle.
